How to Play Checkers Master

Everything you need — from your very first move to advanced King strategies.

Step-by-Step Rules

Follow this guide to go from first-timer to confident player in minutes.

1

The Board and Setup

Checkers Master is played on an 8×8 board with alternating dark and light squares. Only the dark squares are used. Each player begins with 12 pieces placed on the dark squares of the three rows nearest to them.

  • You control one colour; your opponent controls the other.
  • The player with the darker pieces traditionally moves first.
  • The board is automatically set up for you when you launch the game.

2

Basic Movement

Regular pieces move one square diagonally forward — towards your opponent's side. To move, drag your piece to a highlighted valid square.

  • Pieces can only move forward (toward your opponent) until crowned King.
  • You cannot move to a square occupied by another piece.
  • Each player takes turns; you cannot move twice in one turn (unless chaining captures).

3

Capturing Opponent Pieces

To capture an opponent's piece, jump diagonally over it to the empty square on the other side. The captured piece is removed from the board.

  • Capturing is mandatory. If a capture is available, you must take it.
  • Multiple captures in a single turn are allowed — and required — if they are available after each jump.
  • You may choose which capture to make if multiple options exist.

4

Becoming a King

When your piece reaches the far end of the board (your opponent's back row), it is crowned a King. Kings are visually distinguished on the board.

  • Kings can move diagonally in any direction — forward and backward.
  • Kings capture in any diagonal direction as well.
  • A King is still bound by the mandatory capture rule.

5

Winning the Game

The game ends when one player captures all of their opponent's pieces, or when the opponent has no legal moves available on their turn.

  • Capturing all 12 opponent pieces wins the game.
  • Blocking all opponent pieces so they cannot move also wins.
  • The game can also be drawn if neither player can force a win — this is rare but possible in advanced play.

6

Controls in Checkers Master

Checkers Master uses intuitive drag-and-drop controls designed to work on any device.

  • Desktop: Click your piece, hold, and drag it to a highlighted valid square. Release to place.
  • Mobile/Tablet: Tap and drag with your finger. The board scales to your screen size automatically.
  • Valid moves are highlighted when you select a piece — no guessing needed.

Pro Tips for Checkers Master

Strategies to Give You the Edge

  • Control the centre of the board early — central pieces have more movement options and restrict your opponent.
  • Keep your back row intact for as long as possible to deny your opponent easy Kings.
  • Trade pieces strategically — sacrificing one piece to gain two is usually a winning exchange.
  • Think two or three moves ahead. Every move should serve a plan, not just react to your opponent.
  • Push toward one side of the board to create a numerical advantage in a localised area.
  • Crown Kings as early as possible — the power to move backward transforms your game completely.
  • When ahead in pieces, force exchanges to simplify the board and convert your advantage into a win.
